If you’ve had a love/hate relationship with Instagram for far too long, it might be time to delete your account. Instagram is owned by Facebook, AKA Mark Zuckerberg, and both platforms have a huge problem with scams, data privacy, and allowing the spread of misinformation. Not to mention the affect social media has on your mental wellbeing.
So, if you’re ready to say goodbye to Instagram you have two options: You can permanently delete your account; or if you are hesitant about losing all of your content, you can deactivate your account temporarily to take a break. Deactivation hides your profile, photos, videos, comments, and likes from other users, and they’ll reappear when you choose to reactivate. Both options have to be done from a computer or mobile browser, not from the app.
How to deactivate your Instagram account

- Open Instagram from your desktop or mobile browser.
- Click on your profile photo in the top right corner.
- Tap Profile to access your profile.
- Tap Edit Profile at the top of the page.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and clock Temporarily Disable My Account.
- Select the reason you’re disabling your account.
- Enter your password.
- Confirm your choice.
